Since they started to recover cider in the 70’s, cider in Euskal Herrie follows an impressive progression.
THE CIDER- According to the Natural Cider Association of Gipuzkoa, which makes the 95 % of the Basque cider, on last year there were 13 million liters of cider porduced in EH, of which they say the 60 to 70% was made with autochthonous apple, a proportion that in Nafarroa, Bizkaia and Araba was 100 %.
In Nafarroa there were made 200.000 liters, in Bizkaia 250.000 and in Araba 120.000, despite the half of it was apple juice, each time more demanded.
According to the cider makers this 2015 season is the best they had so far, and the new cider season will begin on next 13th in Gipuzkoa (Astigarraga), the 14th in Araba (Askartza) and the 15th in Nafarroa (Lekunberri), while the “txotx” in Bizkaia will be on the 20th of January in Amorebieta-Etxano.
