Cider masterclass in the Ateneo Obrero in Xixon

Under the name “Asturian cider of cider from Asturias?”, Marcos A. Fernández gave Astura’s monthly lecture.

LA SIDRA.- Yesterday, cider featured the talk which took place in the Ateneo Obrero, led by Marcos Abel Fernandez Marques, La Sidra magazine’s publisher and chairman of the Foundation Asturies XXI.

After the presentation by Amadeo Benavente, Marcos A. Fernandez set out issues related to Asturian cider such as if cider made in Asturias with apples from other countries, ice cider or only the one regulated by the DOP must be considered cider.

The legislation do not establish the same scales to consider Asturian all types of cider, as it happens with other beverages like wine. And this leads to confusion, coming to be regarded as such sparkling cider, but not perry, with a great historic tradition.

Issues like Asturian cidermaking by two fermentations, unlike the ones from other countries, were also raised, and pros and cons of the regulation made by the DOP “Cider of Asturias” were dealt with.

Among the first ones, we found the fact of the product dignification to promote our territory and guarantee the survival of apple orchads, harvesters and landscape, which results in identity economy.

But, on the other hand, it is counterproductive, leading to a genetic empoverishment, the rejection of the DOP non-member cidermakers and the loss of the “Asturian brand”, as they cannot use symbols or names associated to Asturias.

After the speech, the expert on European ciders Eduardo Coto offered a tasting of German, Czech, French, English and Asturian ciders.
